Contrary to some public opinion, the care and welfare of thoroughbreds once they finish their careers as racehorses is a major focus of many stakeholders across the racing industry, and there are many positive stories that can be provided to anyone who cares to listen.
One such example relates to a 23 year old retired gelding who raced with the Balfour stable as Cobamuse. He is now known as Cobber and is loved and cared for by his owner Felicity Mills aka Flick.
Cobber was the first horse that Felicity ever bought when she was just 16 years old and they have just recently celebrated 10 years together. He spends his days in Felicity’s loving care, being ridden several times each week, and shows his love of outings by walking straight on the float. His favourite places are the beach and the forest as evidenced by these photos.
As a racehorse, Cobamuse raced 55 times for 8 wins and 19 placing when he finished racing in 2007 he had accumulated over $186k in prize money.
Ryan recalls Cobber as one horse he grew up with working alongside his dad, David, and he was much loved around the stables particularly by Ben Conway, part owner and whose colours the horse raced in. Ryan also recalls several trips to Melbourne where he raced as a 3 yo in group races.
A successful racehorse enjoying his life in retirement and still providing great experience for his human friends.
